Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 finely diced onio
  • 1 diced green bell pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • Hamburger buns

Instructions

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat.
  • Add the diced onion and bell pepper to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Season with salt, pepper, and chili powder.
  • In a small bowl, mix together ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and mustard. Pour this sauce over the meat mixture and stir to combine.
  • Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Lightly butter the inside of the hamburger buns and toast them until golden brown.
  • Spoon the meat mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, add optional toppings if desired, and place the top bun over the filling.

Notes

Adjust sweetness with brown sugar or honey. For a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with lentils or tofu. Serve with classic sides like potato chips or coleslaw.
